What's in your diet soda: the health risks of...
wcfoodies:
In 1965, a chemist at G.D. Searle & Co discovered aspartame. By 1981, aspartame was approved by the FDA and for sale under Searle’s trademarked brand name, NutraSweet. On aspartame’s shoulders, an entirely new arm of the food and drink industry was born: the calorie-free-sweetener ‘diet’ market.
In 1980 - a year before the FDA approved NutraSweet, and its active ingredient,...

This is especially interesting in a time where Republicans are trying to eliminate programs like the National Endowment for the Arts. The US is losing the race.
not just losing it, we’re *throwing* it. we’re a complacent society that thinks, for the most part, that our own political action begins and ends at the voting booth.

I Stand With Planned Parenthood →
saucy:
librarysciences:
Did you hear? The House voted to bar Planned Parenthood from federal funding. They cut funding for HIV tests, cancer screenings, birth control, and more, putting millions of women and families at risk. We can’t let it go unanswered. It’s time for you and me to stand with Planned Parenthood. Sign the open letter to the reps who voted for this bill — and to the senators...

A rundown of other amendments in the bill that House Republicans used to kill Planned Parenthood’s budget:

“I feel like I’m talking in vague garbage so I’ll do what I always do to clarify myself: I’ll keep talking.”
That’s like the one true character thing about me, I feel. Talk myself into a corner and keep talking until I’ve found my way out or my audience has...

Going to the Movies
Kit: I want to go see a movie tonight. But I have to be at the tents early tomorrow.
Me: So we'll go tomorrow night.
Kit: No, I have to be at the tents even earlier on Monday.
Me: So we'll go Monday night.
Kit: And even earlier on Tuesday.
Me: So we'll go next week.
Kit: I'll be on a job.
Me: We'll go next year. 2012: the year we see a movie.
Kit: I'll have work then, too.
Me: Then when you retire.
Kit: That's never gonna-
Me: In 50 years. We'll go on our jetpacks.
Kit: Okay. Yeah. Sure.
Me: Date night lives!

So what are you seeing this weekend? Justin Bieber’s Never Say Never? Brooklyn Decker’s slow-motion boobies in Just Go With It? The animated Gnomeo & Juliet which features voice acting from James McAvoy, Emily Blunt and Ozzy Osbourne? Ed Helms’s Cedar Rapids? Well one thing is for sure. You won’t see me dressed as the Bieber again anytime soon. The things I do to entertain...

Yesterday, my 3 year old dog had 11 teeth...
$2,000 later, he’s back home and passed out in bed.
Turns out there wasn’t much we could have done to prevent this; the vet said the infection originated inside his teeth, so by the time we noticed it around his gums, it had already wreaked a lot of destruction in his mouth.
However, we are definitely taking him off of dry food and switching him to either a wet diet or a raw diet....
