Catching Elephant is a theme by Andy Taylor
Last week, we went to Pittsburgh to celebrate my grandma Shirley’s 94th birthday. That’s her there, blowing out the candle on a birthday dessert.
Yes, I’m lucky to have her genes. But I’m even luckier to have had her influence throughout my life. Shirley is as kind, as loving, as liberal, and as witty at 94 as ever. I never had to watch The Golden Girls growing up because Shirley was the real deal and sharper than Bea Arthur (much love, though). High-brow, educated at a time when that was unusual for women, and a no-nonsense badass with a penchant for offal and a surprisingly large trove of strip club stories, I’m pretty damn proud to be her granddaughter. Hell yeah, Shirls.
Maybe if I show her this blog post she’ll give me her much-coveted stuffing recipe…
She’s 5’ tall, weighs maybe...every meal. Gotta love it.
