Bikes can and should behave much more like cars than pedestrians. They should ride on the road, not the sidewalk. They should stop at lights, and pedestrians should be able to trust them to do so. They should use lights at night. And — of course, duh — they should ride in the right direction on one-way streets. None of this is a question of being polite; it’s the law. But in stark contrast to motorists, nearly all of whom follow nearly all the rules, most cyclists seem to treat the rules of the road as strictly optional. They’re still in the human-powered mindset of pedestrians, who feel pretty much completely unconstrained by rules.

Felix Salmon: A unified theory of New York biking

A must read for all New Yorkers, not just cyclists.

Hell yeah.  NYC bicyclists are ASSHOLES.  One day I’m gonna knock one over.  They are so rude and do not follow any laws whatsoever.

NYC bikers can be more dangerous to pedestrians than cars. When I’m biking, I stay off the sidewalk, follow traffic, and stop for red lights (although I do make right turns on red if there are no pedestrians at the intersection or cars coming (duh).) A few weeks ago, I stopped at a red light and almost immediately got my back tire clipped by another biker. He was profusely apologetic, we were both fine, and then he asked me: “Why did you stop short?”

“I didn’t,” I replied. “It’s a red light.” Which I thought was perfectly logical, but he wrinkled his nose in disgust and took off around me - nearly hitting a pedestrian as he peddled through the intersection.
