We are YouTube Next Chef!

Sorry for the lack of content lately, but here’s kind of the reason why: we’ve been selected as one of the 16 YouTube Next Chefs, and have been working hard to gear up for the program. Here’s a little bio vid about me (Rebecca) and the show, and we’ll be sharing more great Next Chef content over the next 12 weeks. We’re really honored to be a part of this cool program and can’t wait to share the experience with all of you!

Local snapper. Perfect grill. By the way, we named the fish Herbert.

The sad part is I don’t even like snapper. More for everyone else!

Meet and Eat with Rebecca of Working Class Foodies

On average, a lunch special in New York City costs $8. Multiply that by 365 and it’s nearly $3000! Multiply that by 3 and it’s $9000 – we didn’t even need a calculator.

Granted, NYC is notoriously expensive and those who choose to live there must accept they will bleed money with every step they take on its bustling sidewalks. But across the country, food prices in general are on the rise, and “eating healthy” seems like a privilege reserved for the wealthy (rhyme alert). In fact, a recent AP article discussed new U.S. nutritional health guidelines, and the common idea that limited budgets directly translate to poor eating habits.

Sounds like someone hasn’t heard about Working Class Foodies.

Working Class Foodies is a show devoted to making healthy eating affordable. Rebecca is the fearless captain/writer/producer/editor at the helm of WCF. She recognized a serious lack of options for people cooking on a modest budget, and her remedy was this show. Four seasons later, WCF has been nominated for multiple Tasty Awards and Rebecca is currently developing a cookbook for Gotham Books.

In the beginning, she didn’t even write many of her recipes down. Now, you can go to the Working Class Foodies Blog and download a whole bundle! We recommend the Blintzes Blitz collection.

Organic-friendly places like farmers markets are tough for people shopping on a tight budget. Whether you qualify as one of these folks or not, Working Class Foodies can help you build meal plans that are local, seasonal and, most importantly, affordable. Plus, she has two adorable dogs as her co-hosts – who doesn’t love dogs? Answer: nobody.

Enjoy this grill-side chat with Rebecca and then head over to the Working Class Foodies channel to check out more ways to eat organic on the cheap.

The nice people at Hungry Nation are so nice.

Okay, Tumblr buddies. Do you love Hannah Hart’s My Drunk Kitchen as much as we do? What would you like to see on a My Drunk Kitchen/Working Class Foodies crossover show?

Fresh Five with Working Class Foodies
Admit it - you’ve been looking forward to this next installment of Fresh Five, haven’t you? Well you’re in luck, because we’ve got the second episode for you right here. We asked our friend Rebecca from Working Class Foodies what five things were on her plate this week, and she told us about the five grilling videos she has been into lately.

It’s pretty easy to say that grilling is one of those things that really makes summer, summer. Hard core grillers will make it out there even in a snowstorm. But for the rest of us, there’s nothing quite like firing up the coals (or gas) on a nice summer day with a beer or lemonade in hand, and spending time with friends and family around the fire.

While most people use their grill for burgers or steaks (Rebecca gives you a whole playlist of burger videos), how many of you have used your grill for making desert? Some of you? Cool. Well how many of you have hacked your grill into a pizza oven? Fewer hands. That makes sense. That’s the kind of grilling Rebecca’s been finding interesting this week (not to mention one of our favorites), and hopefully you’ll enjoy them as well!

And if you think Rebecca’s taste in grilling videos is good, her taste for affordable, healthy, and delicious food to make at home is even better. So head over to her channel to see what new dish she’s serving up each week.

That’s it for this week’s Fresh Five! Check back next Monday for a new episode, and stay tuned for more new stuff throughout the week on Hungry Nation!

bliptv:

It’s hot here in NYC. Hot hot hot. 103F at the moment. At times like this, our thoughts turn to beer.

But what to drink?

As for us? After work today, we’ll crack open some delicious local ales and lagers from Brooklyn Brewery and Sixpoint. Yum.

These are all great videos. I need to put our Cask’o’Lantern episode up on Blip asap - back in 2009 we tried to brew a pumpkin ale in a pumpkin.

Here comes YouTube Next.

nextnewblog:

Today, we’re very excited to share the news that Next New Networks is now part of YouTube. Our company will become a core component of YouTube Next, a new team that will focus on supercharging content creator development on YouTube, driving deeper expertise in partner audience development, and incubating new ideas that can be shared with the broader community.

Since we launched in March 2007, we’ve had the goal of building an effective platform for developing, packaging and building audiences for original web video programming. To date, that programming has been viewed over 2 billion times and built a following of more than 6 million subscribers. A big part of that growth has been the more than 60 independent producers who have partnered with us as part of the Next New Creators program, including popular YouTube partners such as The Gregory Brothers, Hot for Words, and Nalts, in addition to the ongoing growth of networks like Barely Political (home of Obama Girl and “The Key of Awesome”), Indy Mogul, ThreadBanger, and Fast Lane Daily.

While our team will continue to work out of our offices here in New York as the YouTube Next Lab and Audience Development Group, I’ll be stepping down from a rewarding stint as the company’s CEO and continue producing cartoons from my company, Frederator Studios. Our popular cartoon network, Channel Frederator, will continue its partnership with YouTube, and I’m looking forward to a close and fruitful relationship with the company personally and professionally. Our current chairman, Lance Podell, will also be joining the YouTube Next team as global head for the group.

Everyone here is very excited to work even more closely with the YouTube team, and looking forward to expanding our mission to provide guidance and support in creative, production, and audience development to all aspiring and current YouTube partners.

Thank you, everyone. It’s been a great beginning.

Congrats to all my friends/partners in crime/executive producers at YouTube Next!

Today is my birthday, guys. And this is super shameless, but I'd love if you could vote for Working Class Foodies in the 2011 Tasty Awards.

wcfoodies:

We’re up for nomination in the following categories:

  • Best Home Chef in a Series
  • Best Male Host in a Series (Max, even though he’s been on hiatus since Season 1. Still love him, though!)
  • Best Female Host in a Series

And you can also vote for the stellar documentary Kings of Pastry in the Best Film or Documentary category. It’s an amazing film about France’s elite pastry chefs and it’s by world-renowned documentary team DA Pennebaker and Chris Hegedus. I was the associate producer on the film and it was a really fun and educational experience that resulted in a fantastic and mouth-watering film.

Thanks, folks!

Seriously. I am being ridiculously shameless. Reward me for it.

We have a lot of content on Next New devoted to frugality. From crafting your own halloween costumes, to building Hollywood-style props for next-to-nothing, it only made sense to continue that fine tradition in the kitchen.

Enter the “Working Class Foodies,” Rebecca and Kit.

“WCF” was one of our launch shows in 2009, for our food network Hungry Nation (“Real People. Real Food.”). Its combination of gorgeous shooting, and love for sizzling up affordable but edible dishes made for great programming and even better cross promotion.

Says Rebecca, “Once we decided to make it a show, we tried to cast it … we tried to make it more … I guess gimmicky, more Food Network-y, and then we just thought … why? … that’s the kind of show we’re sick of watching. Why make a show that we don’t even want to watch? So we decided to make a show that we would want to watch.”

With around 65 episodes under their much-experienced belts, the Foodies lead the way for local, sustainable, and organic food within our Hungry Nation and beyond. Make sure to check out this week’s Creators Spotlight.
